Immediately upon crossing the border, one is surprised by how much cleaner – in terms of trash on the side of the road, the kind that gets thrown from the bus windows – Costa Rica is compared to the other countries to the north (but south of the Rio Grande). The contrast is astounding.

The prices are also about double what one is accustomed to paying, which makes for an equally astounding but significantly less pleasant surprise.
